TOPIC: Set Apart for Righteousness (1 Peter 2:9)
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
From the very beginning, GOD has always dealt with man based on relationship and it has always been through setting apart. The word “chosen people” in Isaiah 43:20 used to apply only to Israel but is now used for both Jews and Gentile believers. The responsibility once solely trusted to the nation of Israel has now, during this age of grace, been given to the church.
At Sinai, God told Moses to tell the people, “You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Ex 19:6). Now believers in this era of grace are called a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.
Christians are a special people because God has preserved them for Himself. As Israel was “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God,” so also believers today are chosen people, priests, holy nation and belong to God.
To be ‘set apart’ is to be chosen. It implies that after careful consideration, you have been selected from among the over 7 billion people living on earth, not by merit but by mercy and grace. The word ‘for’ in this context implies purpose. God called us with intention. He chose us for something superior and higher. The main purpose why He called us is to know Him, love Him and demonstrate His righteousness here on earth. Christ has shown us example and as man He proved that this is possible.
The word “righteousness” connotes decency, morally upright in the face of immorality, doing the right thing even if the world does not approve of it. Standing for the truth and facing its consequences.
What exalts a nation and put one nation above others is righteousness. Real greatness, progress, justice, and growth are all products of righteous living. No nation has ever been successful when systems and individuals live in perpetual fear, disunity nepotism, tribal sentiment, ethnicity, segmentation, religious war, regionalization and the likes. We are reminded of who we are today and the purpose for which God has chosen us. Let’s live life worthy of this great calling and do things not because others will approve of them but because that is our calling in Christ Jesus. May the Holy Spirit help us to live a separated life in Jesus Name.
1. What effort are you making towards righteous living?
2. If Christ comes now, are you qualify to go with Him?
1. Dearest LORD, help me day by day to walk in righteousness.
2. Precious Holy Spirit, give me the grace to live a life worthy of my calling.
THE MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implore thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother, to thee I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petition but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
