ABOUT US

The group came into existence in early months of 1984 when the city of Abuja has just started being developed as the administrative capital of Nigeria. The Holy See had equally followed suit by carving out Abuja as an Arch-diocese preparatory for the souls that would inhabit the newly developed city with His grace Most Rev. Dr.; Dominic Ekandem as the first Bishop of the metropolitan city of Abuja. Early in that year 1984, Bro John Okoye who was with Dove of Peace Community in Kano was transferred to Abuja and had come along with his letter of introduction to the prayer group of his new parish. Incidentally, there was none in Abuja as the church was merely starting. Dumez site office was used alternately by all the various denomination in Abuja for the purpose of worship. On his arrival to the parish, as there was no charismatic group, he gave the letter of introduction to the parish priest, Rev Fr Kukah, now the bishop of Sokoto diocese who after consultation with the parish council and the arch-bishop of Abuja was told to start the renewal in the parish. The parish priest however assigned Rev Sisters Theresa Nwammuo and Lucy Afander and two others to guide the group during their Sunday Bible studies and Wednesday prayer meeting.

The officials then were:

  1. Bro John Okoye……………Group Leader
  2. Sis Blessing Njoku…………Assistant. Leader
  3. Bro Tony Nwoko……………Secretary

At this stage, the leaders sought to have a name. In order to be properly guided by THE HOLY SPIRIT, they declared fasting and prayers and thereafter met to consider some names. Out of the whole lot that were advanced, all unanimously settled for LIGHT OF THE WORLD.

EARLY CHALLENGES

The prayer group continued to witness rapid growth both in attendance and in spirituality resulting from the influx of people into the city. The prayer group were not spared of the initial misunderstanding of the activities of the renewal everywhere. The church authorities have consistently looked at the renewal activities as not conforming to the solemn activities of the church viz-then vocal prayers, counselling, clapping of hands, teachings, etc. These activities were indeed alien and caused some measure of mistrust as to our claim of being Catholics. This got to a head in 1990 during when Wednesday prayer was interrupted in order to present the dos and don’ts by the assistant parish priest, Rev Fr Anthony Onyesor. Crisis started when after a reasonable length of time had elapsed without his conclusion and a piece of paper was handed to him to round up since we have other things to do. This didn’t go down well with him. All attempts to calm him down by Bro Vincent Ezeilo our leader at that time who had joined the prayer meeting proved abortive. The next Sunday, the parish priest Rev Fr Fabian Essien announced that the assistant parish priest whom he sent to the charismatics has been beaten and that the whole church should kneel down for atonement.  After the prayers, the group was suspended indefinitely. The brethren were not happy because there was mis-representation of what happened at the prayer meeting. After waiting for about three months amidst representation to the church authority, the group started off prayer activities in Bro Romanus Ebedes residence in Wuse zone 5. The group grew in numbers and were fervently fasting and praying that all the issues may be resolved amicably. After sometimes, due to space problem, the group relocated to Bro Alozieuwa Felix’s house at Wuse zone 6 where we were until 1991 when we were called back to the church. The church however gave conditions that the leadership would be schemed. Some of the leaders were equally skeptical about harmony and free worship in the church and on their own opted out while some even left the church entirely. The group continued to suffer restriction on their recall to the church. The group‘s Bible studies that use to be on Sundays was clashing with the newly formed parish Bible study class on Sundays. In order to help boost the programme, the group suspended theirs and attended massively. After about two Sundays, it became obvious that it was only the renewal members that were in attendance. It was decided that the group should shift their Bible studies to Monday to avoid any problem with the parish priest. Even though we now have our Bible studies on Mondays we still attend that of Sunday so that he would not blame us for the collapse of the Sunday Bible studies. Till date our Bible studies day had remained Mondays. There were constant accusation that we have not been useful to the parish. In order to create impact, the group started organizing the 6a.m. mass choir. That is why the 6 a.m. mass choir is popularly called Charismatic Choir. The restriction has been well pronounced, prayer session could be halted at will, and permission must be sought for all things which are often denied. In one of the years Bazaar and Thanksgiving, the group’s name was deliberately omitted from the list for the procession of thanksgiving despite our preparation. It took the intervention of His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the then arch-bishop of Abuja to reverse the decision thus allowing the group’s offering to be made.

The group was later to nurture another prayer group at Holy Rosary Parish Wuse with the name DOVE OF PEACE.

The group has continued to grow both in numbers and spirituality. The evangelization outreaches were expanded. Those Catholics that left the church for another churches returned and through the renewal their doubts about the faith were erased and they became strengthened in faith. With large membership, more house fellowships were opened. More service ministries were carved out. The ambassador group uniting all the singles in the group were created. This created a good platform to teach them to serve God while they were still young.

A newsletter, ’De-Light’ was established to help evangelize and inform the brethren about issues that are needful for their spiritual well-being.
